Boosted by Nemo, Patria enjoys continued success in the international market Patria AMV, the global market leader of modern armoured wheel vehicles, has been joined by another Patria mortar system. As a result of recent export deals, Patria Nemo, a 120mm mortar system, has also gained the market leader position in turreted mortar systems.

As it stands, the Patria AMV 8x8 armoured wheeled vehicle is an unprecedented success story. At present, Patria holds contracts for over 1,400 vehicles with seven different customers – both are figures that none of Patria’s competitors has been able to match with their corresponding modern vehicles. Patria AMV vehicles have been deployed in international crisis management operations since the summer of 2007. The recent success, an example of which is the Swedish Defence Forces' choice of the AMV, is a further boost to Patria, with respect to the company's future prospects.

Undeniable international success Thanks to its new Nemo mortar system (New Efficient Mortar), Patria has also gained the global market leader position in turreted mortar systems in a relatively short period of time. The Patria Nemo 120mm mortar system was first introduced to the market in 2006. Since then, the system has been chosen, for example, by the United Arab Emirates Navy and, more recently, the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) project of the United States government. In that latter project, the Patria Nemo mortar system will be mounted on a US vehicle chassis.

Market leader for turreted mortar systems Patria Nemo is a modern turreted mortar system that features, among other things, excellent stealth characteristics and ballistic protection. The system has superior firepower (10 rounds/minute), allowing it to fire MRSI bursts (Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact), upon which five shells will hit the target almost simultaneously. The mortar can fire not only conventional indirect but also direct fire, which is unique for mortars.

An additional advantage is that Nemo is compact in size, and, above all, light (approx. 1,700 kg). This means that Nemo can be integrated into a truly wide array of vehicles and vessels. Significant role in the Finnish defence industry The Nemo deals concluded to date will have a significant effect on employment, both at Patria and its Finnish subcontractors. Deliveries will take place between 2012 and 2013. The Nemo project will provide an excellent reference for top Finnish know-how.

”The projects that are currently underway constitute a major breakthrough for this technology, representing, at the same time, important milestones in the sales and marketing efforts of Finnish mortar system in the international market. This provides an excellent foundation for the future,” says Seppo Seppälä, President of Patria Land and Armament Oyj, emphasising the importance of the project.

Patria’s turreted mortar systems are strong evidence of the know-how that decades of designing, manufacturing and using mortars has accumulated in Finland. The result is a unique new weapon system with large export potential. The future for turreted mortars was carved in Finland; now, Nemo is ready to meet the needs of international customers.
